Racing to the end

The Owatonna Girls Cross Country is nearing the end of their season with a few meets left to go. As they get closer to the Big 9 meet and section meet both here in Owatonna they are hoping to have a very strong finish to the season. The team is currently in the top half of the section and trying to succeed in the more important races at the end of the year. The Huskies have two home meets left this year, the Big 9 meet will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 19 and Section 1AAA meet will be on Thursday, Oct. 28. Both will be at Brooktree Golf Course.

With the season off to a good start, the finish, which is the most important is right around the corner. Veteran coach Mr. Dan Leer really likes the team and the effort put in. Coach Leer said, “We’ve got a lot of girls that have put in a lot of time in the summer training.”

With the work being put in, the Huskies are really trying to put their best foot forward and have it pay off at the end of the season. With every sport, injuries are not a rare occurrence and they will happen occasionally. Coach Leer said, “We’ve got some bumps and bruises and we’ve got some things that we have to kind of straighten out, but we’re going heading into our, you know, most important races.”

Senior Laura Stevensen, a six year runner and a captain is sad yet excited to finish it off but hoping to finish strong. Stevensen said, “The strengths (of the team) are definitely working together and keeping a positive mindset.”  As last year was hard for spectators due to COVID-19 protocols, this year has been much easier for spectators to watch with less restrictions.

The Huskies are hoping to put all the factors of a good team together and putting their best foot forward as they near the end of the season. The Huskies will run next Tuesday, Oct. 12 at Minneopa Golf Club in Mankato and then return home again finishing off the season on Tuesday, Oct. 19
