The OHS Speech Team is off and running with their season. The team has had three meets so far and has six left, including the Big 9 conference meet and sections. The team is made up of about 45 members.

There are 13 different categories for each member to choose from. Some of the categories are funny, serious and write your own. Each member chooses a category then chooses a speech, whether it is an already published one or writing their own. The members then sign up for time slots to practice their speeches. Coach Ms. Marcia Anderson said, “Honestly, the practices are my favorite part because you get the chance to work with the kids and see their growth from week to week.” The members compete their speeches on Saturday meet days against other schools.

So far, all of the meets have been able to be in person, although the award ceremonies have not been held due to COVID-19. This has not stopped the team and their drive to do well at their meets. Senior captain Julia Christensen said, “I like that I can represent our amazing team. It’s awesome to see each and every member of our team grow throughout the season.” The team works hard and it shows through their dedication.

Not only is the OHS Speech team a hardworking group, but they are a close group as well. Junior member Lileigh Nguyen said, “I love the community aspect of being on the team. Everyone is always ready to cheer people on and support each other at meets.” The team has formed close relationships that help them at their meets

The OHS Speech Team is about halfway through their season. They have four meets plus the Big 9 conference meet and sections left. The team is hopeful that some members will proceed on to the state meet. Their next meet is on Saturday, Feb. 26. They have a home meet  at Owatonna Middle School on Saturday, Mar. 12.
