The Huskies 2022 soccer season officially came to an end on Tuesday night. The Owatonna Boys Soccer team had a heartbreaking loss in overtime against Rochester Mayo in the section final game. The Huskies lost 2-1 to the Spartans.

Led by a strong group of seniors, the Huskies had an impressive season with a record of 14-4-1. Head coach Bob Waypa said, “It’s not just a record, it’s what they did to get to the record. The work they put in preseason, in season, in practice and in games.” The boys team was dedicated to the sport and played for the ones standing next to them. Coach Waypa said,  “The seniors set the new bar of the new standard of what we expect from our program next year.” The senior boys have been playing together for years which have created excellent team chemistry.

Senior captain Benny Bangs had an outstanding high school career. Bangs shattered the record for most goals in one’s high school career. The previous record was held at 33 goals as Bangs had no problem setting a new record at 40 goals in one’s high school career with 17 of those goals coming from the 2022 season. Along with breaking a record, Bangs is a finalist for Minnesota Mr. Soccer. Bangs said, “This opportunity has shown me that hard work does pay off, and for me it was grinding in the off season with friends.” Bangs being a key player to the team will be deeply missed next season.

The Huskies will graduate a total of 10 seniors leaving gaps within the team to be filled in the 2023 season.
