With spring around the corner, testing is coming just as quick. The ACT is an optional entrance exam that juniors and seniors can sign up to take. The test measures students’ college readiness and is often considered along with a student’s GPA. The higher you score, the more eligibility you have for acceptance and scholarships.

The test consists of English, math, reading and science. In the math portion, students will have to model and show skills on topics related to geometry, algebra, probability and statistics. The science portion consists of analysis and problem solving of biology, chemistry, earth science, and physics. Assistant principal, Ms. Hollie Jeska, is the ACT coordinator and works with the district test coordinator. She explains that in order to prepare for the test, a lot of the core classes do ACT prep work. There are some activities and practice tests you can take.

Ms. Jeska said, “There’s a lot of other online resources, so there’s a lot of different opportunities for practice.”

Making sure that you are prepared for the test has a big influence on your performance.

With the changes in the last two years, students are now able to opt in to take the test instead of it being mandatory. This can reduce stress because people who sign up are choosing to take it.

Junior Laken Meier said, “I’m taking AP classes that will hopefully help me do well on the test. I’m just stressed over the fact that it’s timed.”

Meier, along with many other students, have not taken a timed test like this before.

Ms. Jeska says, “It’s important to come in and be relaxed and try your best with knowing that if it doesn’t go well, this could be your opportunity to just see what it’s like.” Being able to retake the test can reduce stress levels and just give students a chance to see what the ACT test is like.

You can be prepared by having your chromebook charged and having the right tools needed. Making sure that you get a good amount sleep the night before and eating a good breakfast are also important. Students will come in to test in their assigned classroom at 8:10 a.m. on April 25. More information will be sent to students as the date gets closer.
