On April 11, students at OHS will be taking the MCA. Sophomores and juniors are the two grade levels required to take the tests at the high school. The type of MCA test a student will take depends on the grade they are in. Sophomores take the reading and science MCAs, whereas juniors take the math MCAs.

While sophomores and juniors take the MCA on April 11, freshman and seniors get the day off.

Assistant principal Ms. Hollie Jeska said, “Grades nine and 12 do not have school, grade 11 will test in the morning and then they are free to leave for the day. Grade 10 will have a break of about an hour and fifteen minutes in between their tests. There will be lunch and other activities so they can hang out in between their tests.”

This is what the day will look like for all of the OHS students.

Although many students may choose to opt out of the MCA, there are many benefits to taking the MCAs. Ms. Jeska said, “MCAs give you a good picture of where you are at academically and maybe where you need to grow before you graduate.” MCAs can demonstrate the growth a student has made throughout the year, as well as tell students areas they could work harder at.

Junior Chloe Ingvaldson said, “I feel like even though standardized tests are not fun, I feel like they kind of just help me get ready for more tests and other things I will have to do later in school.” MCAs can help students prepare for other standardized tests in their future like the ACT or SAT. Along with standardized testing, taking the MCA can help students with normal tests in classes at OHS.

MCAs are beneficial for both the students and the school. Students should make sure to attend the MCA if they are a sophomore or junior.
