Spring is coming up, which means more time to spend outside in the nice weather. One of the most popular outside hobbies is gardening. Studies show that around 55 percent of Americans grow some type of vegetable, herb or fruit. Growing a garden has many perks and can benefit people at any age.
There are many different reasons people garden. It can improve mental and physical health. It’s a good source of exercise, and vitamin D from the sun can increase immunity and boosts a person’s mood. For many people, it is a mindless way to spend time. When gardening vegetables, it’s a great source of nutrients. Gardening is an easy and fun way to ease stress and boost self esteem. Many people turned to gardening during the pandemic to spend some time outdoors while being locked up.
Math teacher Ms. Marcia Anderson used to have a big vegetable garden, but now spends more time growing flowers in different types of pots.
Ms. Anderson said, “I think it’s really important for people to understand where things come from and how it all works.”
Gardening can bring a new perspective on how foods are grown and the work put into it.
Gardening is also important for bugs like bees and butterflies to pollinate. Pollinators like these are able to keep gardens thriving and healthy. They keep veggies nutrient-rich and maintain ecosystems while increasing food production.
Timing is very important in having successful plants. Late March to early May is prime time for starting a garden. Things like cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, flowers or strawberries are good to plant. To start a garden there needs to be a plan of what will be planted and where. A place with good soil and lots of sunlight that has access to rain and other watering sources is necessary. This can be in the ground, or pots and vases. Seeds can be bought at stores or farmer’s markets.
After planting the seeds, the plants need to consistently be getting enough water. If it’s not a rainy season, plants should be watered about three times a week. If planting veggies, it’s important to make sure that they are ready and ripe before picking them. Making sure to regularly maintain your garden is important. Weeds and bugs can quickly take over and destroy your plants.
Gardening is one of the most common spring hobbies, and it is something that everyone can do. Putting a little effort into some plants can benefit a healthier, happier life.
