April showers bring…postponment?
April showers bring May flowers, but it also brings the complications of spring sports. Over the past month, many Minnesota schools, including Owatonna, have had games either postponed or cancelled due to the poor weather conditions. The boys lacrosse team has only had a few home games, as well as softball, baseball, track, golf, girls lacrosse and tennis. Activities director Ryan Swanson said, “It’s really a struggle behind the scenes for our coaches to get practices in. We have the indoor option, but it gets old after a while.”
Though the weather conditions aren’t as bad as last year, they are still causing big problems. Senior captain Amy Filzen said, “With so many meets getting cancelled, it’s kind of hard to see how you are doing as an individual.” There are many things to take into consideration when it comes to playing conditions. Looking at the forecast to see if there are any storms coming, making sure the temperature is doable and making sure the field itself is in good condition. With the weather postponing or cancelling games, teams will be finding themselves pretty busy throughout the rest of their seasons. Swanson said, “We are getting to a point where a lot of teams are going to be playing 4 or 5 games a week.” Stay tuned to Big9.org or follow @ohsmagnet for weather cancellations of your favorite OHS Team.
