In the month of October, many fall sports are coming to a close in their regular season. Most of the fall sports practiced over the summer since the middle of June. There are still many of the OHS fall sports continuing their season in mid-October and goals of reaching the end.
Girls soccer lost in their section finals. They played to their fullest aiming to beat Lakeville North but lost in the third round of sections. Senior Kennedy Katzung said, “We played really hard and it was overall a bittersweet moment with all of my friends.” Their record for the season was 13-5-2, which was a successful year for the soccer team. They were ranked first in the Big 9 and won their championship game. During sections, they played Lakeville South and Farmington and won against both teams which was a huge accomplishment since they hadn’t won against them in a long time. Their season ended when they got beat in section finals by Lakeville North.
Boys soccer lost in their first round of sections on Oct. 8 and had a record of 4-8-5. The team’s hardest game was against Rochester Mayo. They lost 2-3, but the team put up a fight to score as many goals as they could in their hardest game of the season. Senior captain Kellen Katzung said, “We still had some really good moments.” The team did not do as well as they had hoped but they were most proud of the team atmosphere they built throughout the season.
Girls tennis just finished their regular season matches and competed individually on Oct. 10. Their team record was 9-2. The team was very proud of how they did this year with their record. They headed into individual sections which ended in mid-October. The team has not gotten to the section final four in four years which was very exciting for the team. OHS Girls Tennis accomplished many of their goals this season.
The OHS Football Team is having a spectacular season. They have a record of 8-0 in the 2024 season. Senior captain Blake Davison said, “It’s awesome to see us going undefeated and putting in the extra work to be the best we can.” They are amazed at their work this year, staying late and working hard at practices to accomplish their goal of being undefeated. Senior captain Nolan Ginskey said, “The ultimate goal is to bring a state championship back to Owatonna.” They have hope in achieving this goal this year since they have a hard working group of players. OHS football is heading into their first round of sections on Saturday, Oct. 26 against New Prague.
OHS Girls Volleyball had their last regular season game before sections on Oct. 15. On that night, the juniors gave speeches to the seniors to celebrate senior night. In their senior night game, they played Rochester Mayo and beat them in five sets. Senior captain Halle Theis said, “It was very special because it was senior night and the program had not beaten Mayo in a very long time.” The team was thrilled about this win against Mayo and is hoping to continue the wins as they go into sections. They are heading into sections with an 8-3 record. OHS Volleyball has their first round of sections on Wednesday, Oct. 23 against Farmington.
October is commonly the end of many fall sports. Volleyball, girls tennis, soccer have ended their season. Football is still competing in sections. Their next game is on Oct. 26 at home.
