Jones makes state
In the 1AAA boys golf tournament on Tuesday, June 3, Owatonna had six golfers participate. The boys were Peter Jones, Ted Urch, Gage Schuster, Andrew Wall, Jeffery Johnson and Ben Konold. With the support of Coach Bangs, Peter Jones made it into state with a combined score of 140, and his is our state qualifier for this year. Jones has been playing golf since he was eight years old, and joined the high school team in seventh grade. Every day when he had time he would practice to someday make it, and win state. Jones said it is a big relief because it was not an easy competition. Jones said, “If I play my own game and make the smart decisions I believe I can win.” Coach Bangs said that Jones has done very well averaging 72.8, which is phenomenal for the weather. Bangs also said, “He is a tremendously talented young man with lots of potential, and will do very well beyond High School.” If Jones does well at state it will be the last High School game of the year, and he plans on qualifying for the junior matches this summer. Jones will have to be on the top five percent who try out. The State Tournament is on Tuesday and Wednesday, June 10 and 11, at Bunker Hills Gold Club in Coon Rapids.
