Happy Hauntings
MagNet’s Top 10 Halloween ideas for you
Even for the most unromantic of minds, there is something about October. Whether it be the crisp air, turning leaves, or eerie sense of otherworldly company, this is arguably the most wonderful time of the year. If you don’t have $40 to go to ValleyScare, and logging onto Pinterest only reminds you how cute and craftsy everybody else is, fear not. Here at MagNet, we have created a list of cheap activities to do this weekend that will make for a frightfully good All Hallow’s Eve.
- Have a themed movie marathon– Hocus Pocus. Edward Scissorhands. Coraline. The Nightmare Before Christmas, Sweeney Todd, Beetlejuice, and Ghostbusters, just to name a few. This is not including of course, all the cheesy horror films that have more corn syrup than they know what to do with, or any actually disturbing movies such as Ouija Board. The possibilities are bountiful.
- This brings us to the most Halloween-y film of them all: The Rocky Horror Picture Show. It follows two clean cut young people; Janet Weis and her fiance Brad, as they accidently stumble upon Dr. Frank’n’Furter’s lair after encountering some car trouble. The Doctor claims to have found the “secret to life” and convinces them to stay the night. This 1975 film by Jim Sharmman is a cult classic and will be playing at the Paradise Theater in Faribault on October 30 at 7:30 p. m., October 31 at 10:30 p.m., and November 1 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 for students and $15 for adults; dressing up is encouraged.
- Go camping, even for just one day. Fall is the best time for this activity. There are no bugs, it is the perfect temperature, and you can enjoy the beautiful outdoors before spending the next six months cooped up.
- Participate in a local church’s Boo for Food on Wednesday night from 6p.m. to 9p.m. It is exactly like regular trick-or-treating, only you collect canned items for the Food Shelf., and have a worship service afterwards at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church.
- Help out an elderly neighbor with their leaves. Even an hour of your time will make their lives so much easier.
- Visit the Farmer’s Market Saturday morning 7 a.m. to approximately 11 a.m. Acorn squash is in season, which can be used as a delicious and healthy substitute for french fries, pies, and even pasta. There are also many interesting crafts and clothing items for sale.
- Hand out candy to the neighborhood kids! It is fun to see how excited they get when you have candy for them. Also, keep track of how many Frozen princesses you see.
- Host a costume party. For an entire night, Halloween allows you to be a completely and totally different person. Why would you not take advantage of that?**
- Or, if you are not feeling too up to hosting, you can attend the OHS’ Drama Club costume party. It begins at 7 p.m. in the Small Group Forum and will feature movies, food, and a costume competition, all for only $3.
