Heading into the final period
February 5, 2015
Back in December, Owatonna Wrestling was 3-0 in the conference and 3-2 overall. The Huskies were also heading into the All Force Minnesota Christmas Tournament, debatably the toughest tournament in the state. Results from the Christmas Tournament were; freshman Peyton Robb placed 1, sophomores Tanner Cole and Brandon Moen both placed 3, and senior Alex Green placed 7. As a team, Owatonna finished 14 out of 33 teams. The next event on the Huskies’ schedule was the Rumble on the Red in Fargo, North Dakota. Sixty teams participated in this outrageously huge tournament in which Owatonna kicked off the new year with a 14 place finish. Individual results were: Robb, 3. Moen, 2. Cole, 8. Many duals, tournaments and triangulars took place in January.
The Huskies’ record has jumped to 13-6 overall and 8-1 in the conference, losing only to Albert Lea.
Owatonna only has three events left before sections and state competition. This Thursday, Feb. 5, Owatonna will host Faribault for the Huskies’ last conference dual. Feb. 5 is also Senior Night, a special day for senior members to receive recognition for their commitment to the team. Senior Captain Wechtuor Thuok said, “I expect nothing less than a victory. I expect us to perform well on Senior Night.” The Huskies then hit the road to take on Kasson-Mantorville on Friday, Feb. 6. The final event will be the last for the JV team as it is the Big 9 JV Conference. Head JV Coach Scott Seykora said, “Our JV has had 38 different wrestlers participate this year. It is a great opportunity for these developing wrestlers to compete in the Big 9 JV tournament and hopefully showcase the hard work they have put in this season.” Section competition begins next week on Thursday, Feb. 12.
