The classics are what inspire many movies today and it would be hard pressed to have an in depth conversation about movies and not hear some of those classic titles mentioned.

One of those movies that would be brought up is Rain Man. Rain Man is a movie about a selfish son who goes on a cross-country roadtrip to acquire the inheritance he believes he deserves, but there is one small problem–it has been entrusted to his institutionalized brother he never knew. Raymond (Dustin Hoffman) teaches his brother Charlie (Tom Cruise) many different lessons over the course of their trip together. This movie is the winner of four Oscars- Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Director and Best Writing screenplay written directly for the screen, along with many other nominations. This movie has grossed over 350 million dollars worldwide and is largely considered a classic by many. Magnet gives this movie a 4.5/5 stars for amazing acting and great character development throughout the whole movie. In 1988 Dustin Hoffman brought attention to what Autism looks like as a whole.

Silence of the Lambs is another classic. Clarice Staling (Jodie Foster), a brand new field agent,l takes on her first case at the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Clarice is forced  to turn to the cannibalistic Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) to help solve a string of murders committed  by one of Hannibal’s old patients. The Psychopathic Lecter doesn’t give anything away, however, and leads the FBI on a wild chase to stop the killer from committing his next murder. Silence of the Lambs won five Oscars- Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director and Best Writing, along with 30 other nominations. This movie is one of the most decorated award winners in cinema history and grossed almost 273 million dollars worldwide. This movie earns 5/5 stars. It is both suspenseful and horrific without being gory or full of “jump scares” like other horror movies. The eerie aura that Hopkins is able to project throughout the movie is a perfect addition to it. This movie is intense and fast paced and will always keep the first time watcher on the edge of their seat.

The iconic Dirty Dancing is a staple of the late 80’s movie industry. In it, the dancing  duo Baby Houseman (Jennifer Grey) and Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze) fall in love during a summer vacation after Johnny’s dance partner becomes pregnant. Baby and her family are spending the summer at the classy all inclusive summer resort destination.  Johnny is a dance instructor to provide lessons and a nightly show . The story intensifies when Baby must lie to her father to obtain money for an abortion, which during the time of the movie, was illegal. Although this movie is not as decorated as the others, it won an Oscar for Best Original
song and had six other nominations. It also grossed close to 64 million dollars worldwide. This movie is way ahead of its time for its great choreography, adults themes and the introduction of Swayze into the movie industry, earning it 4/5 stars.

These movies are all a benchmark of their industry, whether it was in their cinematography, acting, or just being ahead of it’s time. These are just a few of the movies that will be remembered by movie lovers forever.
