Boys Soccer off to a sizzling start
The Owatonna Boys Soccer team hit the ground running this season. They opened their season by beating state power houses, Apple Valley and Lakeville North. The importance of starting the season on the right foot was crucial for the Huskies.
The team is holding onto a 5-1-2 overall record. This year’s captains are seniors Ryan Guenther, Ricardo Gomez, Luke Bunkers and junior captain Mitch Mayer. Guenther, a striker, said, “We have a tough stretch ahead of us. We have seven games in fifteen days.”
Recently, the form of the Huskies has been in question. Coming off of back- to- back losses, the game against Rochester John Marshall was a must win. Guenther said, “After losing to JM last year in the Section 1AA finals, we are looking to take back our grip on the Rockets.” When asked about how he motivates the team, Mayer said, “I try to motivate my team through my actions and encouragement while on the field.”
Leadership is crucial to the Huskies’ chemistry on and off the field. Head coach, Bob Waypa said, “Having great leadership is paramount to achieving success. I believe we have four great leaders guiding this team to a great season.” Come and support the team on Thursday, Sept. 24, as they face conference rival Albert Lea.
