As the holiday season approaches, Owatonna will be having a holiday kickoff Thursday, Nov. 19, downtown at Central Park. The lighted holiday parade will start at 6 P.M., and every float in it will be brightly lit up. The floats will start on Front Street and head South on Cedar Ave making their way towards Central Park. Concluding the parade will be the Lighting of the Lights in the park. The crowd will countdown for the light switch to be turned on, lighting the holiday lights in Central Park. This year, Sharon Stark has the honor of flipping the switch.

The OHS carolers will also be at the event to kick off their season by singing classic Christmas songs in the park. Junior Jenna McMains said, “It’s always a privilege to be part of Carolers, and it’s always very rewarding to see the joy that the group brings to the community.’’ The crowd can enjoy hot cider and cookies provided by the Owatonna Foundation while listening to the carolers. Mr. and Mrs. Claus will also make an appearance in the parade and businesses downtown. Although downtown businesses are typically open later on Thursdays, they will have extended hours for the night. Melanie Sunnarborg, the Director of Marketing and Main Street said, “We host this event as kick-off to the holiday season. I would call our parade the mini-holidazzle –all of the floats must be lit in order to be a part of the parade.’’ Make sure to clear your schedule Thursday, Nov. 19, and attend the Lighting of the Lights.
