Jason Williamson ran in five touchdowns against the Chaska Hawks.

The Owatonna Huskies Football team played the state quarterfinal game against the Chaska Hawks in TCO Stadium. Staying true to form, the Huskies ran the ball down field, which saw two touchdowns by senior captain Jason Williamson. The Hawks gained ground quickly in the second quarter, scoring two touchdowns and a field goal. The first half ended with Chaska leading 17-14.

The team came into the second half ready to fight harder than before. Williamson scored once again, bringing the Huskies ahead 21-17. With 1:11 left in the third quarter, junior Carson DeKam makes a 12 yard touchdown reception from quarterback Sol Havelka. The rest of the game consisted of two more Williamson touchdowns and an interception by junior Isaac Oppegard. The Huskies finished victorious, winning 42-27. Head coach Jeff Williams said, “We made a few mistakes, but very frankly came out in the third quarter and just controlled the line of scrimmage, both offensively and defensively, and were able to put the game away.”

The Huskies will be heading to US Bank Stadium for the third consecutive year. It is also Jason Williamson’s third year playing at the state championship, but he isn’t intimidated by the Bank. Williamson said, “You take a look around, say ‘This place is pretty cool,’ and then you just go, ‘It’s just another game.’” With a relatively young team, many of the players haven’t played in that kind of atmosphere yet. Coach Williams said, “We’ve got a bunch of kids who haven’t experienced that before, but I thought they played with great poise today and they earned their own trip.” The state semi-final game will be held in Minneapolis at US Bank Stadium on Friday, Nov. 16 at 2 p.m. vs. Elk River. This is the third match up for the two teams.  Owatonna High School will follow the early release schedule. Students will be able to sign up for fan buses next week. Tickets are available online or at the stadium only.
