OHS partakes in the annual solo ensemble events in Minnesota.

The OHS is widely known around the state for their very talented music department. Choir, Orchestra and Band are the three classes that make up the music department. Each of these classes has three different skill groups: Huskies, Varsity and Concert. Concert is the highest of the three. Although many arts perform for the enjoyment of others to listen to, the OHS music department will be performing and competing at the solo ensemble festival this weekend. Like any performing arts performing at the event, the OHS students and teachers are thrilled to be a part of this. There will be individuals, duos and small group performances of classical and choral composed pieces performed at these events.

After her performance this past weekend Alayna Wannarka, a junior at OHS said she, “can’t wait to perform again, and possibly see people again from other schools next year.” She enjoyed her time playing the flute for a small audience and hopes to do it next year as well.

While in preparation they took into consideration OHS music director Ms. Asmus said, “There are ten minute time slots.”

Ms. Asmus is thrilled to have had students be a part of the Solo Ensemble event this past weekend. Band will be going on the 28th and the choir will be going on February 4th. Which is not always normal but with this year the board for solo ensemble decided to split it so kids could attend both days if they are involved in both musical activities.

Asmus said, “There are large group festivals like Big 9 that happen in the spring.” She is excited that Big 9 and other activities are a great opportunity to work together as a group.

Together as an ensemble, she is delighted to take part in helping students prepare in each student’s individual performance, duet, and small group ensemble parts. Having her past experience helps students as Ms. Asmus was a part of the solo ensemble at Lakeville South every year in high school.

Minnesota is full of a lot of talent musically. Ms.Asmus finds it wonderful how students get to highlight everything they have done to grow as a musician, allowing them a great opportunity. She hopes what students take away will fill into our larger group ensembles.

Many students have been excited to perform. OHS freshman Vitaly Bauer, has been incredibly excited to perform at Albert Lea High School this weekend. Bauer has been practicing for months in preparation for this event.

Students believe Solo ensemble is a great opportunity to get a student more active in music. By becoming dedicated to a song, Bauer has become more dedicated to practices and dedication to his euphonium.

Bauer said, “I am excited to watch how other people play and how they are dedicated to their instruments. Throughout the day, I hope to learn more about others and what I am capable of with my instrument.”

After his performance this past weekend Bauer said, “It went very well and I got a superior rating, which is the best rating you can get.”

Overall Bauer found the waiting worth it. He has learned a lot through this experience and he plans to keep continuing the tradition of going to solo ensemble. Going forward allows me to learn more and teach others.

The Solo Ensemble choir event will be this Saturday, Feb 4, at the Albert Lea High School.  Different groups and individuals will be performing throughout the day displaying their talents for judges and others to hear along with other competing schools.
